Chandler Klang Smith on Goldenland Past Dark (video)

I sat down to chat with Chandler Klang Smith at NYC’s Book Culture to discuss her fascination with the circus, the inspiration behind her debut novel Goldenland Past Dark (ChiZine Publications), which follows Dr. Show and his struggling travel circus during the 1960s. Its success lies on the sixteen-year-old hunchback, Webern Bell, who runs away from home to join Dr. Show’s circus as a clown; both of them have a dark past that is slowly catching up to them.

Smith began the novel while attending Bennington College. The story evolved from short stories about Webern’s childhood, but it wasn’t until she studied at Columbia University, that the “real story actually began,” Smith said.
